What is a TL431 Voltage Regulator?

TL431 is a programmable shunt regulator which will act like as an adjustable Zener diode. The standard Zener diode has fixed voltage but the TL431 is allow you to set the output voltage using tow external resistors. It contains an internal reference voltage of 2.495V.

When the reference voltage is reached through the two voltage divider circuit using resistor R1 and R2 then the TL431 conduct and current pass through the Anode and Cathode pins.

TL431 Calculator Formula

Vout=Vref×(1+R1R2)V_{out} = V_{ref} \times \left(1 + \frac{R_1}{R_2}\right)
  • Vref = 2.495V
  • R1 is resistance value of R1 resistor.
  • R2 is resistance value of R2.
