LoRaWAN: Wireless Tech Can Reach 15Km on a Tiny Battery

LoRaWAN means low power wide area network. Using low power energy and it can connect the another LoRa receiver in wider area range. The radio modulation technology is used in it to transmitting the signals and it is most commonly using in IoT projects.

In our daily life the internet of things is expanding quickly. The major changes is going to happen in agriculture, transportation, smart home and industrial systems. Easy of communication and remote control is the key feature of Lora network. One of the most innovative and rapidly adopted technology arrived, this is LoRaWAN. Low power consumption, wide area connectivity and high accuracy are the important factors for this modules.

What Is LoRaWAN?

LoRaWAN is a Low Power Wide Area Network technology, designed by RAKwireless company. This modules will connect battery powered devices to the internet over long distances. It’s built on LoRa radio modulation technology. This is a type of chirp spread spectrum radio technique, which allows data to travels to long distances with minimal power consumption.

The LoRa devices are communicate with gateways and how data is handled by network servers. If the signal sent by the transmitter the signal confirming by the receiver then sent back a confirmation message to transmitter. The combination of range, efficiency, and flexibility makes the device ideal for IoT applications where devices are expected to operate for years on small batteries and send small amounts of data periodically.

How LoRaWAN Works

The working of lorawan is splits by several parts like End device, gateways, network server and application server.

  • The End device are the sensors or actuators, such as temperature sensors, water meters, or GPS trackers that send small packets of data.
  • The Gateways receive LoRa transmissions from end devices and forward the data to the central server via a standard IP network (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular).
  • In Network Server The processes and routes the incoming messages and removing duplicates and managing device connections.
  • In Application Server the data is made available to the end-user through dashboards, alerts, or integrations with other systems.

Each message is encrypted end-to-end using AES-128 encryption, ensuring secure data transmission even in untrusted environments.

Benefits of LoRaWAN

  • Needs Ultra Low Power for working and single battery can run for 5–10 and it will reducing the maintenance costs and effort.
  • Long Range of connectivity over 2-5 km in urban settings and up to 15 km in rural areas.
  • Operates on License-Free Spectrum, it Uses ISM bands (e.g., 868 MHz in Europe, 915 MHz in the U.S.), so there’s no need to pay for spectrum licenses.
  • It Supports adaptive data rates and device classes (A, B, C) for power control, and bi directional communication.
  • Features strong encryption and authentication mechanisms. so their is no compromise in security in data communications.

Real World Applications

  • Smart Agriculture
  • Smart Cities
  • Industrial IoT (IIoT)
  • Utilities and Smart Metering

Smart Agriculture

In agriculture field farmers can use LoRaWAN sensors to monitoring the soil moisture, temperature, and livestock tracking. Based on the received data farmers can improve their crops production and enhance yield and sustainability.

Smart Cities

In smart cities LoRawan modules can control the street light monitoring the air quality and waste bin tracking, smart parking sensor can implement. This technology will improve overall smartness of the city.

Utilities and Smart Metering

In Utilities and Smart Metering LoRa can be used to monitoring the usage of water or gas. It can be also used to altering for gas leakage.
