But here’s the twist, I didn’t want to lose my BIOS settings again. So I researched, and figured out how to replace the CMOS battery safely without losing any configuration. And now I’m sharing the exact steps I followed. So you don’t have to repeat my mistake.

What Is the CMOS Battery and Why It Matters

The CMOS battery is a 3v coin type and it powers a tiny chip on your motherboard that stores your BIOS settings, boot sequence, system clock and hardware preferences.

When it dies (usually after 3 to 5 years), your PC resets to factory defaults every time it’s unplugged. That can be annoying or disastrous if you rely on custom settings.

Backup BIOS Settings First

Before I even touched the motherboard, I made sure to save a copy of my BIOS settings. you can follow the any one option to backup, which are

Option 1: BIOS Screenshot Backup

I rebooted and entered BIOS (usually by pressing DEL, F2, or F10). Took photos of each screen using my phone—boot order, RAM settings, fan profiles.

Option 2: Save to USB (if supported)

Here’s the secret most people miss, To avoid resetting the CMOS, you must power the BIOS memory while changing the battery. So, I plugged in my PC’s power cable again, but didn’t turn it on. This provides a trickle of standby power (5VSB) to the motherboard.

Step 3: Swap the Battery Quickly

I opened the side panel, found the silver CR2032 battery, and gently popped it out with a plastic tool. Within 10 seconds, I inserted the new one with the same polarity (positive side up).
