Thermistor is non ohmic: Temperature Dependent Resistors

The Thermistor is an electronic component which will changes the resistance based on the temperature. The thermistors are disc capacitor like structure and color in black with white labeling on it. Their are two types of Thermistors we can see. NTC thermistor and PTC thermistors. Thermistor is non ohmic because their resistance will changes significantly when the temperature is changes. This phenomenon is violating the principle of Ohm’s Law. The ohms law states that the resistance should be constant regardless of voltage or current. The thermistors are not following this rules.

What is Ohms Law?

The Ohm’s Law states that the current through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage across it, and it is directly proportional. In an ohmic conductor, the resistance remains constant will not change regardless of the applied voltage or current.

Thermistors and Temperature Dependence

The Thermistors have a strong temperature dependent resistance. In NTC type of thermistor, the temperature increases resistance will decrease. But in PTC thermistor if the temperature is increases the resistance also increases.

Non Ohmic Behavior of Thermistors

As we see that the thermistor does not have a fixed resistance value. The resistance of the thermistors will changes when the temperature changes. This relationship between voltage and current is not linear. It means the resistance is not a constant value. This non linear behavior of thermistor is makes it as a non-ohmic electronic component.
