2N2222 Transistor: Pinout, Equivalents and Uses

The 2N2222 or 2N2222a is a NPN transistor commonly using in audio amplifier circuits and switching circuits. This transistor is easily available in any local electronics market or shops. Cost wise this transistor available in cheap rate. These transistors is my favorite transistor for diy projects and most of the also electronics hobbyists also likes this. In this article I share the details of 2N2222 transistor pinout, equivalent and its uses.

2n2222 Transistor Pinout

2n2222 Transistor Pinout

The 2N2222 transistor is coming in metal and plastic packaging here i am giving the pinout of TO-92 plastic package with the pins facing downward and the pin configuration is as follows,

  • 1. Emitter
  • 2. Base
  • 3. Collector

Equivalent Transistors

If the 2N2222 isn’t available at your hand or want to change with another or equivalent transistors choose the given transistors which are given below.

  • PN2222 has a direct plastic-packaged version with similar ratings.
  • BC337 is another general purpose NPN transistor with a different pinout, so you need to check the datasheet.
  • S8050 is common in inverter and RF circuits which is also a NPN transistor.
  • 2N3904 has a lower current rating of approximate value of 200 mA, but is often usable in low-power circuits.
  • ⚠️ Always verify pin configuration and electrical characteristics before substitution.

Uses of 2N2222

  • Switching Applications – This transistor can Can handle up to 600 mA of current, so it is  suitable for switching small loads like relays and LEDs.
  • Signal Amplification -This transistor is most common in audio preamps, sensor signal amplifiers, and low-frequency amplifier stages.
  • Oscillator and Timer Circuits – The transistor is used in astable multivibrators, pulse generators, and basic oscillator designs.
  • Digital Logic Circuits
