How to Read Resistor Color Codes
- First identify the number of bands, if it is 4, 5 or 6. Then place in your hand and the closest band to the edge of your left side. The wider spaced band is tolerance and which will be in your right side.
- Read the digit from left to right, identify which color it is.
- Apply the number and multiply the digit with with its multiplier value.
- Read the Last band in resistor which is in either gold or silver it represents the tolerance value.

The Resistor Color Code Calculator tool is a simple and powerful tool designed to help electronics enthusiasts, students, and engineers quickly identify the resistance value of a resistor based on its color bands. Select the appropriate colors for the first two bands, the multiplier, and the tolerance (gold or silver) values. Then the users can instantly see the corresponding resistance value displayed in ohms, kilo-ohms, or mega-ohms with a visual representation of the color band.
Quick Reference: How to Read the Bands
A simple explanation about how to read the bands of 4, 5 and 6 Band resistors given below,
The 4-Band Resistor
- Band 1: First significant digit
- Band 2: Second significant digit
- Band 3: Multiplier
- Band 4: Tolerance (usually Gold or Silver)
The 5-Band Resistor (High Precision)
- Band 1: First significant digit
- Band 2: Second significant digit
- Band 3: Third significant digit
- Band 4: Multiplier
- Band 5: Tolerance
6- band Resistor
In band 6 resistor the first 5 bands are same like 5-band resistor the 6 the band is temperature coefficient.
- Band 1: First significant digit
- Band 2: Second significant digit
- Band 3: Third significant digit
- Band 4: Multiplier
- Band 5: Tolerance
- Band 6 is Temperature Coefficient
