Samsung Electronics and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) have developed a new kind of cooling technology that could replace traditional refrigerators. In a study published in the journal Nature Communications, the researchers introduced a high performance solid state cooling system, that uses a method called the Peltier effect. This technique cools by running electricity through special semiconductor materials. this method does not need any harmful refrigerants. So it making it more environmentally friendly.
Breakthrough Nano-Engineered Solid-State Cooling Technology
What makes this new system special is the use of ultra-thin, nano engineered materials. These thin film semiconductors are not only much smaller and lighter, but also much more efficient. The efficiency is about 75% more than earlier versions. Samsung and APL’s new cooling device uses only about one thousandth of the material typically required and the production process is simpler and this making it easier and cheaper to mass produce.
This breakthrough is important because it offers a faster and more precise temperature control than the traditional methods. It also opens up new possibilities for use in everyday appliances like refrigerators, as well as in high tech fields such as medical devices, car electronics, data centers, and semiconductors. This new solid state refrigerator is the first of its kind to perform better than traditional systems.
