What is an inverter

The inverter is an electronic and electrical device that converts the Dc voltage ( direct current ) to Ac current ( alternative current ). simple the inverter consists of:-

  • The DC-AC converter circuit board
  • Step-up transformer

What is a Dc-Ac converter circuit board

The base of the inverter is a Dc-Ac circuit board or inverter driver board. The Dc-Ac driver board contains several electronic components like ic, resistors, capacitors, transistors, and MOSFETs.

These components are connected in a printed circuit board (PCB) and soldered. the Dc-ac circuit board will give the battery input wire, transformer connection wires, and Ac line input wires.

  • Dc input wire – The battery has to be connecting here according to the polarity.
  • Ac input wires – provide the direct ac line to these wires. ( when the ac line is off the Dc-Ac converter starts to work and the ac line is regained the Dc-Ac converter gets stop)
  • Transformer connection wires – This is the three-wire connecting to the transformer. The center-tapped transformer is mostly using for the Dc-Ac converter or ups. The transformer primary coil has 3 wires ( center-tapped ).

What does an inverter do

What does the inverter do? The Dc-Ac converter will convert the direct current to the alternating current by the help of mutual induction on the transformer coil.

The Dc-Ac converter will do the same job as the direct ac line current does. the Dc-Ac converter will switch when the power failure situation. and provide the ac supply without any interferences.

Dc-Ac converter is based on power output. some small Dc-Ac converter will give 100 watts, 200watts and 1kwatt, etc.

The power of the Dc-Ac converter is based on the battery capacity and the transformer size. The battery has 100ah and the providing voltage is 12v, the power of this Dc-Ac converter will be:

Power = volt * current

= 12 * 100

= 1200 watts or 1.2kwatts

How does an inverter work

The working of the Dc-Ac converter circuit is very simple. The Dc-Ac converter driver board will be generating the switching of the dc supply at the same frequency of the alternating current as 50hz.

Then this high power dc will pass through the primary coil of the transformer and inducing a flux change throughout the transformer. The wind is more in the secondary coil, so the mutual induction has to be happening in the secondary coil and transfer the voltage from one coil to another coil. so we get the 220v with 50hz output.

The Dc-Ac converter is in 2 types

  • Square wave Dc-Ac converter
  • Sine wave Dc-Ac converter

Square wave inverter

The square wave Dc-Ac converter will be providing the output frequency of square type and you can check this by an oscilloscope.

Sine wave inverter

The sine wave Dc-Ac converter is the frequency is as like the alternating current. the half positive and half negative part on it.

What size inverter do i need

The size of the Dc-Ac converter you needs means the power of the Dc-Ac converter. the power increased the size of the Dc-Ac converter will be increased. the power is based on your requirement.

Example: You want to work all the lights of your home. in the 5 rooms has 5 bulbs, each bulbs having the power of 10 watts.

so the total power requirement is 50 watts. so you need a 60 watts Dc-Ac converter.
