Electronic Water Softener: Circuit Diagram and Its Explanation

The water softener is an electronic device that will be used to treat the hard water. Which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. The water softener works by removing the unwanted or the causative ions from the water by the help of electromagnetic field generated by the 555 circuit.

Water Softener Circuit Using 555 IC

This 555 IC based circuit is more effective and cheap in price , when compared with the powerful magnets. The device consists of a coil wrapping on the copper pipe water inlet (Incoming water area). The electromagnetic field is applied on the pipe when water passes through it.

The IC 555 is powered using a dc source of maximum 12v. Not exceed the input voltage above 15V Dc. The pin number 4 and 8 of IC is connected to the 8 V to 10V DC.

Coil on Pipe

The main thing is coil making around the pipe uses a 5 meter long insulated wire for coil the Gauge will be 24 to 20 AWG. The copper wire is wound around the pipe as a single layer.

You must note that the pipe will be either plastic or copper one, not use steel pipe it wont work. If the pipe diameter is 20mm the copper winding should be around 55 turns on it.

Based on the diameter of the pipe the number of windings will be changed. Big diameter pipes only have a smaller number of windings.

555 IC Pinout

The NE555 IC consists of 8 pin plastic packaging and has 8 pins. The available pins on the IC are ground, Trigger, Output, Reset, Power supply, Discharge, Threshold and Control voltage pins.

What is water softener?

The water softener is an electronic device which will remove the hardness of water causing elements like calcium and magnesium from water and make it soft water.
