Crystal Oscillator: Frequency, Circuit and Working

crystal oscillator

The crystal oscillator is an electronic device that is used in many wireless and programming IC circuits. These crystals are used for generating a particular frequency range.

The frequency can be achieved by the mechanical resonance of crystals. In this article lest discuss about the Crystal oscillator frequency, Circuit and its working principle.

What is Crystal Oscillator

Crystal oscillators are electronic devices that produce high accurate, precisely, stable frequency.

The crystal oscillator consists of Quartz crystal as the resonating material. The quartz crystal is a piezoelectric material which generates an electrical charge if any mechanical energy is applied.

How Crystal Oscillator works

 The crystal oscillator consist of

  1. Crystal
  2. Feedback circuit
  3. Resonance and oscillation
  4. Output

The working principle of the Crystal Oscillator is dependent on the Heart of the oscillator circuit such as the Crystal ( made up of quartz material ).

The crystal oscillator consists of The crystal amplifier circuit and its supporting components.

When any alternating current (AC) is applied to the crystal it will start to resonate due to the property of piezoelectric effect.

So this will produce megahertz or gigahertz of frequency range as per the crystal property.

The Crystal is connected to an amplifier section. Which amplifies the signal and it will be fed back to the crystal circuit to make a positive feedback looping.
